Water quality variation in intensive and semi-intensive shrimp ponds of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in Tran De district, Soc Trang province were assessed to serve as a basis for farmers and local authorities proposing appropriate solutions to manage culture pond environment successfully and sustainably. Water samples were collected and evaluated from the beginning to the end of the growing season with the frequency of sampling once a week during december 2020 to april 2021. The water quality of the culture ponds was maintained well by the farmers at the suitable concentration for shrimp growth and was in accordance with the QCVN 02-19:2014/BNNPTNT. The average of water quality in the intensive and semi-intensive shrimp ponds were listed temperature (27.2 and 27.5°C), pH (8.3 and 8.2), DO (5.5 and 5.0 mg/L), EC (19.1 and 8.2 mS/cm), salinity (12.4 and 5.9‰), alkalinity (227.7 and 160.7 mg CaCO3/L), COD (14.1 and 16.6 mg/L), N-NO2- (2.29 and 0.95 mg/L), N-NO3- (0.15 mg/L), N-NH4+ (1.3 and 0.63 mg/L), P-PO43- (0.19 and 0.11 mg/L), TP (0.61 and 0.75 mg/L), and TKN (3.78 and 3.47 mg/L). Of which, the value of EC, salinity, alkalinity, DO and N-NO2- in the intensive ponds were significantly higher than that of the semi-intensive ponds. Effective use of feed to avoid excess, and periodic use of probiotics to keep N-NO2- concentration at the suitable level for shrimp growth is very essential.
