Shrimp culture in the Can Gio district started in the 1980s and has always played an important contribution to the Agriculture – Aquaculture production of Ho Chi Minh city. This study conducted from Dec. 2019 to Dec. 2020 aims to evaluate current situation, potential and challenges of shrimp culture in Can Gio district through the collection of primary and secondary data based on interviews local official and households. The results showed that shrimp farming in Can Gio district tends to shift from black tiger shrimp farming to whiteleg shrimp farming; Black tiger shrimp farming from intensive, semi-intensive, improved extensive to eco-shrimp model; while there was a trend of moving from intensive white-leg shrimp farming to super-intensive and semi-intensive farming. The average productivity of whiteleg shrimp farming under different farming models ranges from 4.56 to 19.29 tons/ha and black tiger shrimp ranges from 0.25 to 2.72 tons/ha. The average profit margin of whiteleg shrimp farming models is 0.36 - 0.75 times and black tiger shrimp is 0.68 - 2.19 times. Shrimp farming in the Can Gio district has many favourable conditions for development, including natural conditions, product consumption markets, priority management policies for aquaculture development of Ho Chi Minh city. However, shrimp farming in Can Gio also faces many challenges in farming infrastructure, water pollution, fluctuations in the price of input materials for the farming process, diseases, and shifting issues aquaculture land use to another land use purpose. Therefore, to remain and develop shrimp farmings in the Can Gio, studies to find solutions to manage shrimp diseases and manage aquaculture land use are needed. In addition, it should continue the search and optimization of shrimp farming processes to ensure the sustainability of the model and bring stable profits to shrimp farmers.
