Phu Quoc has experienced rapid urbanization and tourism development, increasing pressure on land-cover conversion. This study assessed land-cover changes in the Phu Quoc Special Zone during 2010-2025. Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 imagery was classified using Random Forest on Google Earth Engine, integrating NDVI, NDBI and MNDWI. The land-cover state of each pixel at four time points was encoded as a 2010-2015-2020-2025 sequence, thereby tracking the sequence of changes at the same location rather than merely comparing individual pairs of time points. This approach identified three types of change-persistence, conversion and land-cover recovery-and determined the number of transitions across the three periods. Overall accuracy for 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025 was 87.6%, 92.5%, 91.3% and 98.1%, respectively, with corresponding Kappa coefficients of 0.83, 0.89, 0.88 and 0.97. Forest cover remained unchanged over 27,189.57 ha, equivalent to 89.17% of its 2010 area; the corresponding persistence rates for built-up land and vegetation were 36.92% and 10.07% , respectively. Only 2.96% of the forest-cover area was converted to built-up land by 2025, while approximately 1,553.31 ha were restored. Pixels with no transitions covered 32,815.75 ha, accounting for 57.99% of the total natural area, pixels undergoing 1-3 transitions were concentrated along the central-western corridor, the southern part of the island and the northern coastal areas. The study proposes prioritizing the protection of stable forest-cover areas, restoring degraded and converted areas and controlling built-up development in areas with high numbers of pixel-level transitions.
