This study surveyed 90 whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming households under intensive (TC) and super-intensive (STC) production systems in Can Tho city and Ca Mau province to evaluate the current use of prebiotics, probiotics and synbiotics in environmental management and shrimp health improvement. The results revealed that the adoption of prebiotics was relatively low, accounting for 15.9% in TC farms and 34.8% in STC farms. The main prebiotic components used were β-glucan (100%) and mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS, 13%). In contrast, probiotics were used by all surveyed farms (100%), with Bacillus being the most common (91.6%), followed by Saccharomyces (26.6%), Lactobacillus (17.5%), purple photosynthetic bacteria (6.5%) and nitrifying bacteria (3.2%). Regarding synbiotics, only 10% of the surveyed households used products combining prebiotics and probiotics to enhance digestion, growth performance and shrimp health. Most prebiotic, probiotic and synbiotic products were applied during the grow-out phase via feed supplementation, with higher adoption in STC farms. Farmers increased the dosage of probiotics and prebiotics by 1.5-2 times in response to deteriorating environmental conditions or shrimp health (55.6%). Farmers generally preferred multi-strain probiotics with reasonable costs and reliable suppliers. These findings provide practical insights for the development of synbiotic products to support sustainable shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta.
